Using Private Haulers (Collectors):

Athens-Clarke County has franchise agreements with all private haulers that operate in the community. According to the agreements, private haulers are required to offer recycling services upon request to both residential and commercial customers (Solid Waste Ordinance, Section 5-2-29). Additionally, private haulers are required to offer a minimum of four (20/25 gallon, 30/35 gallon, 60/65 gallon and 90/95 gallon) levels of garbage service (pay-as-you-throw program) to residential customers and three levels of service to commercial customers.

Please note, Athens-Clarke County does not regulate fees for the private garbage and recycling haulers, so haulers are allowed to charge residents and business owners for recycling services. Should any private hauler fail to provide recycling services or a minimum of four levels of garbage collection service to you, please report this to the Solid Waste Department at 706-613-3501 ext. 340.
