While Athens-Clarke County is working hard to use energy responsibly, residents can help by reducing their energy consumption in their homes.
The average family in America uses 10,766 kWh of energy per year. Most energy consumption comes from space heating and cooling (over 40%, according to US Energy Information Administration energy use reports), but energy use applies to everything from heating water in sinks and faucets to plugging in home computers and devices.
Electrical energy is provided by the burning of fossil fuels or by other renewable energy alternatives. The burning of fossil fuels produces carbon dioxide emissions, which are released into the air as greenhouse gases. To reduce your home's carbon dioxide production (or, your carbon footprint), you can make small changes to reduce energy use or use energy more efficiently.
