Prince Avenue from Barber Street to Pulaski Street will be closed to most through traffic on Thurs., Sep. 22 until noon on Fri., Sep. 23 for road work to change its lane configuration as part of a 60-day study. Detours will be on W. Hancock Avenue & N. Finley Street.
Transit and emergency services will be allowed to travel through the closed area. Businesses with driveway entrances only in this area will be able to access their driveways.
ACCGov began installing a pilot project on May 19 to change the locally-controlled area of Prince Avenue from a four-lane vehicle road with two vehicle lanes in each direction to a three-lane vehicle road with one vehicle lane in each direction, a center turning lane, two separated bike lanes, and other safety features. Final striping and all traffic safety hardware will be installed the week of May 26-30.
The pilot project runs for approximately a half mile from just east of North Milledge Avenue to Pulaski Street.
The purpose of the Prince Avenue Pilot Project is to test and study the feasibility and safety benefits for all roadway users – including pedestrians, bicyclists, transit riders, and drivers – of an alternative street design. The pilot project is part of a larger effort to increase safety and update infrastructure along Prince Avenue to Sunset Drive.
More information on the pilot project is available at www.accgov.com/prince. A public feedback survey will be available online at the site once the pilot project is fully installed.
