Collections from our Community Avon Bottles from Julie Rutledge Exhibit at Lyndon House Arts Center
Tuesday, February 2, 2021
The Lyndon House Arts Center’s Collections from our Community features unique collections of objects found in the closets, cabinets, shelves of Athens-area citizens. Currently on view is the collection of Avon Perfume Bottles from the Rutledge Family.
Julie Rutledge’s grandparents, Sadie and Tom, began collecting Avon bottles in the early 1970s. They were always interested in antiques and collecting treasures in their own attempt to preserve history. One of their past times was going to flea markets and as Sadie said, “looking at all the treasures.” Sadie and Tom were drawn to Avon bottles because they were intrigued with all the different designs and shapes.
Sadie and Tom found a lot of Avon bottles at J&J Flea Market and the Pendegrass Flea Market. Once they started collecting them, friends would also collect bottles so they would have many duplicates. Overtime, Tom built bookshelves in the basement to store all the Avon bottles. No one ever used the fragrances. They just enjoyed looking at them. In the end, they collected more than 2000 bottles.
Julie Rutledge is an English and ESOL teacher who took time off to raise her son. She has worked part-time at the Athens Community Career Academy for the last two years and has enjoyed working with such an ambitious and motivated group of students while also having flexibility to be home more with her son.
