Excerpts from Faith of a Dreamer: Artworks by Gwendolyn Payton Exhibition at Lyndon House Arts Center
Saturday, January 15, 2022
The Lyndon House Arts Center announces the new exhibit, Excerpts from Faith of a Dreamer: Artworks by Gwendolyn Payton, opening January 15, 2022 and on view through March 12, 2022.
Gwendolyn Payton received a degree in Biology in 1972 from Mercer University, but was initially denied a double Major in Art & Biology despite having completed the required courses. The denial was based in racial discrimination. Gwendolyn was a 1965-1968 participant in the Upward Bound program at Mercer, a US government funded program for minority high school students seeking to be a first generation college student.
After completing the course work required for the Studio Art degree, Gwendolyn was told by a professor that she could not participate in the Senior Exhibit, the content accused of being too controversial. After recently sharing her story, it was confirmed that she had successfully completed the course work for the Studio Art degree over 50 years ago.
In 2020, Mercer offered Gwendolyn the opportunity to showcase art pieces that could have been part of the 1972 Senior Exhibit. In 2021, she received her Studio Art degree from Mercer. This exhibit features paintings both from her college days and recent works.
All exhibitions are free of charge and open to the public. Exhibitions are on view during regular gallery hours Tuesday and Thursday 10:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, Friday and Saturday 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
