For Immediate Release UPDATE: October 28, 2019

The male subject involved in the Royale Rd. Officer Involved Shooting has been identified as Nan Zhao, age 45, of Athens. The officers involved are Sgt. Matt Smith who has been with the ACCPD for 14 years and ofc Paul Harris who has been with the ACCPD for 7 months. Smith and Harris remain on administrative leave with pay in accordance with department policy pending a preliminary review of the facts of the case.

For Immediate Release October 26, 2019 Officer Involved Shooting – Royale Rd. 

Information we have at the present time indicates the following:

Shortly after 8:00 pm officers were dispatched to the 150 block of Royale Rd., in reference to investigating a noise complaint call between two neighbors. Officers were informed that one neighbor had threatened to shoot the other neighbor. A short time later, while searching in the area, officers located the other neighbor. When the officers attempted to question him, the individual, a 45 year old Asian male, produced a hand gun and fired several shots at the officers. The officers returned fire, striking the individual.

After securing the individual, officers rendered first aid. He was transported to a local area hospital by EMS, where he succumbed to his injuries. The name of the deceased is not being released pending notification of the next of kin.

In accordance with departmental policy, ACCPD contacted the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and requested that they handle the investigation. Also in accordance with departmental policy, both officers have been placed on administrative leave, pending a preliminary review of the facts of the case.
