Effective on May 31, 2023, the Honorable Beverly Logan, Clerk of Superior/State Court of Athens-Clarke County, Georgia, resigned, thereby creating a vacancy in said office; and Section 15-6-53(b) of the Official Code of Georgia requires Athens-Clarke County Probate Court Judge Susan G. Schaffer to appoint an Interim Clerk until the special election can be held and that a special election be held if such vacancy will continue for more than 180 days.

The Athens-Clarke County Board of Elections and Registration is empowered with all the powers and duties of election superintendents relating to the conduct of primaries and elections pursuant to the provisions of Title 21 of the Official Code of Georgia; and 

It is hereby ORDERED that a Special Election be held on Tuesday, November 7, 2023, for the purpose of filling the vacancy in the Clerk of Superior/State Court.

All persons desiring to qualify as candidates in said election must reside and be registered to vote in Athens-Clarke County, Georgia, and shall be elected by registered voters of Athens-Clarke County, Georgia. 

All persons desiring to qualify as candidates in said election do so by filing notice of their candidacy with the Board of Elections of Athens-Clarke County, Georgia, and by paying the qualifying fee established by law of $2,173.02, as provided by O.C.G.A. Sec. 21-2-131 (a)(1)(B). The qualifying period shall begin at 8:30 am on Monday, August 21, 2023, and shall end at 5:00 pm on Wednesday, August 23, 2023.

Anyone desiring to vote in this election and who is not a qualified voter must register no later than Tuesday, October 10, 2023 at any of the approved voter registration sites in order to be eligible to vote.
