1. What is the Citizens Government Academy?

The Citizens Government Academy is a nine (9) week program held each Wednesday from March 27- May 22, 2019 that is designed to:

• Give residents an opportunity to learn how to access their government
• Familiarize residents with government services, functions and activities of Athens-Clarke County
• Help residents gain a better understanding about how to become involved in local government
• Enhance their ability to communicate effectively with local officials.

Application deadline is Friday, March 8.

2. Who is eligible to participate in the Citizens Government Academy?

Participation is open to Athens-Clarke County residents age 18+. Class size is limited to 25 participants on a first come, first serve basis. Application deadline is March 8, 2019.

3. How long does the Citizens Government Academy last?

The Citizens Government Academy is a ten (10) week program. Sessions are held each Wednesday evening from 5:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. at various locations around Athens-Clarke County. The current program will run from March 27 - May 22, 2019..

4. What topics are covered as part of the Citizens Government Academy?

The Citizens Government Academy covers a variety of topics all structured around the Mayor & Commission's six strategic commitments to the residents of Athens-Clarke County:

• Accountable and Responsive Government
• Healthy, Livable, and Sustainable Athens-Clarke County
• Transportation Mobility and Connectivity
• Financial Health and Economic Prosperity
• Safe and Prepared Community
• Informed and Engaged Community

Each class will be conducted by a department representative and will provide both an informational and interactive learning approach.

The Citizens Government Academy is designed to provide participants with a better understanding of:

• The relationships between residents, the Mayor & Commission, and governmental departments
• The process for deciding why and how government projects are implemented and services are provided
• The ways government projects support Mayor & Commission goals and objectives as well as the Athens-Clarke County Unified Government's strategic commitments.
• Ways to access local government services, functions, and activities
• Ways to be involved in the local government process
• How to communicate more effectively with local government officials
