Kelly Wegel was appointed as a judge in Magistrate Court in January 2022. Prior to her appointment, she was an attorney at the Western Circuit Public Defender’s Office, a staff attorney for the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals in Atlanta, an attorney at the Conasauga Circuit Public Defender’s Office in Whitfield County, and an intern at the U.S. Department of Justice Criminal Fraud Section in Washington, D.C. She graduated from the University of Georgia with degrees in Journalism and Spanish and cum laude from the University of Georgia School of Law. At UGA Law, she was a notes editor for the Georgia Law Review, a teaching assistant, and was named the National Association of Women Lawyers Outstanding Law Student for 2014. She was born in Atlanta and grew up in Snellville. Before attending law school, she was a freelance photographer in Athens. She and her husband, Dr. William Oliver, live in Athens with their three cats. In her free time she enjoys gardening, yoga, and reading.
