About the Athens, GA Film Office
The Athens Film Office - 706-613-3456 (FILM) - serves as the official film liaison and works with many local and state partners. The office is part of the Athens-Clarke County Communications Department and is a member of the Association of Film Commissioners International (AFCI) and Film USA.
Athens-Clarke County is designated as a Camera Ready community by the Georgia Music, Film & Digital Entertainment Office, part of the Georgia Department of Economic Development.

The Athens Film Office will review your submitted listing and, if approved, your property will be added to the local online locations database, which is also publicly viewable on Georgia's statewide Reel Scout database and on the international LocationsHub.
Film Project Form
Individuals or companies looking to film in Athens-Clarke County should first fill out an online Film Project Form. This will allow the Athens Film Office to assess requirements specific to your film.
Regulations for Filming
Prior to filing any forms below, individuals or companies should fill out the Film Project Form above for initial inquiries.
Generally speaking, filming for commercial or non-commercial purposes in public spaces or private property currently does not require permitting unless:
- It requires sidewalk, street or lane closures.
- First, fill out a project information form above and note the roads.
- Additional forms may be required for Athens-Clarke County-managed roads: Lane/Street/Sidewalk Closure Form + Right-of-Way Encroachment Permit
- Additional forms may be required for Georgia Department of Transportation-managed roads (e.g. state routes): Movie & TV Production permit information
- It occurs in park locations.
- First, fill out a project information form above and note the parks.

- It requires use of a local government facility such as City Hall or another facility (Facility Use Application)
Filming with Drones / Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS)
Contact the Communications Deprtment for information related to filming with drones.
Filming on The University of Georgia Campus
Filming on The University of Georgia campus requires formal, written permission from the University. For more information, see their External Commercial & Documentary Filming/Photography on Campus policy.\

- Athena Studios - Purpose built soundstage in Athens, GA with 200,000 square feet of space for productions. Opened in 2023.
