Three co-responder teams currently staff the unit. Each team consists of a sworn officer who is paired with a mental health clinician. Responsibilities include working with the mental and behavioral health community, assisting in calls for service with a mental health connection, and proactively addressing problems before they escalate to the crisis stage. The officers assigned to this unit also train the department’s officers in Crisis Intervention
The Cadet Program provides civilian staff and prospective officers for the agency. Even more important, college students can serve as prime role models for grade schoolers who can easily see themselves attaining their level of success.
Cadets perform routine non-sworn duties under direct supervision. Tasks are completed on a rotational basis throughout bureaus of the Police Department in preparation for a law enforcement career.
Cadets will be mentored by Police Officer Mentors while advising Athens-Clarke County Police Explorers. Additionally, Cadets will accumulate hands-on training and experiences in the classroom and field.
Our chaplains provide confidential support to officers, their families, and the community. During times of crisis, their trusted and non-judgmental support is crucial for officers facing the unique challenges and trauma associated with their work. Our chaplains represent a wide range of religious and spiritual beliefs.
Acting as a ceremonial unit for the Department, the Honor Guard is responsible for presenting the colors, providing ceremonial pallbearers, and rendering honors at various events.
School Crossing Guards, who ensure the safe passage of students. Together, they provide a proactive and supportive presence that enhances trust, safety, and well-being.
