Cat Services

Services for Domesticated & Feral Cats

Animal Services responds to reports of seriously sick or injured cats, cats trapped within a living space, or cat bites or scratches to persons or other domestic animals 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Animal Services also investigates reports of animal neglect or animal cruelty involving cats during normal business hours. Animal Services will not set traps for cats or pick up cats in personal traps.

Animal Services operates a cat shelter facility at 125 Buddy Christian Way (phone: 706-613-3540). Citizens of Athens-Clarke County may surrender cats with proof of residency. The cat shelter is open to the public Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and Sunday Noon to 4:00 p.m., except for Athens-Clarke County holidays. The adoption process and fees for cats is the same as for dogs.

Colony Caretaker
Persons who wish to register as a feral cat colony caretaker must submit an application along with a letter from a local rescue group indicating the person is associated with the group and a letter from the owner of the property giving permission to the applicant to act as a feral cat colony caretaker on the property. Registered caretakers may receive from Animal Services vouchers to partially offset the cost of rabies vaccination, ear-tipping, and neutering of feral cats trapped at the colony location.
