Park Tree Management

GPS ensures better accuracy for future tree management. In 2010 and 2011, Athens-Clarke County completed an ambitious program to inventory all of the individually maintained trees in nine local parks. Each tree was located using a GPS, and data about the size, species, condition, and maintenance needs was collected. The data was then processed using the iTree software suite developed by the US Forest Service.

The 2,033 trees inventoried currently sequester over 565 tons of carbon and are adding nearly 23 additional tons each year. The trees have an appraised value of over $2,000,000. Over half of the trees inventoried are scheduled to receive pruning, mulching, soil decompaction treatments, fertilization, and/or other tree preservation activities during the winter. Additional information about each park can be found in the links below.
