Sandy Creek Park Playground Project

The playground at Sandy Creek Park will be replaced and Athens-Clarke County residents are invited to be part of the visioning and planning process.  Stay connected and learn about project updates, public input opportunities, and timelines.

Our playground visioning survey is now open! Please take a moment to share your thoughts. The survey will be open until 11:59 pm on July 17, 2021.

Public Meetings

The Leisure Services Department is seeking public input on the design of the SPLOST-funded playground planned for Sandy Creek Park. Citizens are encouraged to attend and provide input on the vision for this project. Children are encouraged to attend and will participate in a concurrent visioning process.

The following public input meetings took place:

  • In-Person: Thursday, June 24, 6 - 7:30 PM at Sandy Creek Park 
  • In-Person: Saturday, June 26, 10:30 AM - 12:00 PM at Sandy Creek Park
  • Online: Monday, June 28, 6 - 7:30 PM via Webex

Survey was open from June 17 - July 17th, 2021.

Other Projects at Sandy Creek Park

Sandy Creek Park has undergone several updates in the past few years as part of SPLOST 2011. 

  • Road Maintenance - Beechtree Drive and Campsite Drive were repaved, while Sandy Park Drive was crack sealed and re-striped to preserve the life of the asphalt. 
  • Replacement of Fishing Pier - New fishing piers were installed around Lake Chapman. Fishing pier locations were determined after public surveys were conducted.
  • Replacement of Park Amenities - included 100 picnic tables and 75 trash cans
  • Renovation of Dog Parks - rehabilitation for all five of the park’s existing dog parks. This included new fencing, gates, new entry pads, benches, trash cans and other amenities 
  • Lakeside Trail Updates - included upgrading, rehabilitation, and improved wayfinding of portions of the existing Lakeside Trail at Lake Chapman. Mayor & Commission approved funds from this Phase be moved to Phases 6 & 7.
  • Beach Renovations - rehabilitation of the Lake Chapman beach areas including relocation of beach showers, re-grading of beach area, installation of a new drainage system and renovation of beach shower drains to alleviate erosion issue with the application of new sand following drainage improvements.
  • Playground Replacement - replacement of the playground, with public input.
