Project Description and History

Bridge Closure

On April 3, 2021, a defect was reported on the roadway surface on the Fowler Mill Road Bridge over Little Bear Creek. To ensure the safety of the traveling public, the bridge was subsequently closed to through traffic that same day. On January 5, 2023, contractor, E.R. Snell, Inc., began repairs to the bridge deck which included removal and replacement of the existing bridge deck pans and associated asphalt deck. The bridge was reopened on January 23, 2023.

Bridge Replacement

Following the closure on April 3, 2021, GDOT advised T&PW staff that the bridge would need to be completely replaced. On April 29, 2022, ACCGov received notice from Georgia Department of Transportation of commitment to replace the Fowler Mill Rd Bridge in Fiscal Year 2026. On July 17, 2023, Mayor Girtz received a Letter in Lieu of Project Framework Agreement (PFA) from GDOT which added (PI# 0019549) CR3/Fowler Mill Road Bridge Road over Little Bear Creek to the Statewide Transportation Plan (STIP).

Project Update

Mayor & Commission approved the proposed Project Concept for the bridge replacement on October 4, 2022 and authorized staff to advance the concept to Preliminary Design Phase. Arcadis US, Inc. is currently working on the designs.
