On the morning of Thursday, January 24th, 18 volunteers conducted the annual Point in Time (PIT) Count of homeless individuals in Athens-Clarke County. The PIT Count consists of surveys of both sheltered and unsheltered homeless households. The PIT Count was conducted in partnership between Athens-Clarke County’s Housing and Community Development (HCD) department and the Athens-Clarke County Homeless Coalition.
Volunteers included Athens-Clarke County Unified Government staff (Housing and Community Development (HCD) department, the Geographic Information Services (GIS) Office, and the Manager’s Office) as well as members of the Athens-Clarke County Homeless Coalition.
The Point in Time Count is a requirement for communities receiving homeless services funding through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Athens-Clarke County’s Housing and Community Development department administers HUD’s Continuum of Care (CoC) homeless assistance grant; CoC funds are used to fund permanent housing programs for homeless individuals and families. Individuals who are looking to get involved with the Athens-Clarke County Homeless Coalition can attend the next meeting Thursday, March 7th at 10:30am at the ACC-Library.
