Project Name: Tallassee Road Bridge Replacement

Description: This project is located on CR 476 (Tallassee Road), approximately 3.6 miles west of downtown Athens. The project replaced the bridge over CSX railroad, located 500 feet west of the intersection with Tallassee Road and Westchester Drive. The new bridge consists of two 12’ travel lanes (one in each direction) with 5’ sidewalk and 10’ multi-use trail; and approximately 250’ long across CSX railroad.

Project Goals and Objectives: Replace the structurally deficient bridge over CSX while adding pedestrian facilities along Tallassee Road to improve safety.

Project Schedule: E.R. Snell began work in April 2022 and completed work in August 2023. An official ribbon-cutting ceremony was held on April 17, 2024.

Funding: The project budget was set at $6,114,060 and was funded through TSPLOST, SPLOST and General Fund. $750,000 from the Georgia State Road & Tollway Authority helped fund the sidewalk and multi-use path for future connections.
