Weapons Carry License
Due to the statewide judicial emergency, Probate Court is currently only handling emergencies and other urgent matters, such as some marriage license applications, in person. All of these are by appointment only.
We are working on measures to enable us to process Weapons Carry License applications before the current judicial emergency period expires, but have been urged to begin only when we can do so safely. Provided that necessary protective equipment is in place, we expect to begin processing new Weapons Carry License applications and applications for renewal of licenses issued by another county on June 1, 2020. These will be processed in person by appointment only.
WEAPONS CARRY LICENSE APPLICATIONS MUST BE COMPLETED BEFORE YOU COME IN FOR YOUR APPOINTMENT. APPLICATIONS ARE ON OUR WEBSITE OR CAN BE MAILED TO YOU. ANYONE ARRIVING FOR A SCHEDULED APPOINTMENT WITH AN INCOMPLETE APPLICATION WILL HAVE TO RESCHEDULE FOR ANOTHER DATE.
Beginning on or about May 22, 2020, we will accept, and we encourage, renewal applications for licenses issued by the Probate Court of Athens-Clarke County by mail. These applications may be witnessed by a notary public in the space reserved on the form for a clerk’s signature. According to the Governor’s Executive Order effective May 8, 2020, if your license expired between February 13, 2020 and June 12, 2020, you have 120 days (not the statutory 30 days) after the expiration date on the face of the license to apply for a renewal license. The renewal deadline for licenses expiring later will also be extended if the judicial emergency period is extended.
The fee for a new license is $71.00 to Probate Court and a separate payment of $5.00 to the Sheriff’s Office for fingerprinting. The fee for a renewal license is $30.00. Fees should be paid by check or money order, not cash.
Parties are encouraged to delay any matters that are not urgent until the judicial emergency period expires. If you do feel it is necessary to file a non-emergency action or motion, we ask that you submit those by mail. Please understand that due to a staggered work staff, we will be processing these petitions as we are able.
During business hours we will continue to answer routine questions by phone.
