Project 32: Youth Facility Partnership

Project Summary

In August 2009 the Mayor and Commission approved an Intergovernmental Agreement with the Clarke County School District and the Athens Housing Authority to jointly support the development of a youth facility and gymnasium through the renovation and development of the H.G. Edwards Gymnasium as part of the overall redevelopment of the H.T. Edwards School Complex. The Athens-Clarke County Unified Government will provide $1,000,000 in funding from the SPLOST Project 32, in accordance with the programming schedule, as contribution to the design and construction of the renovation.

Project 32 provided for the renovation of the H.T. Edwards building high school gymnasium into the new youth center. The 20,000 square foot center features academic and athletic programs, a gym, computers with tutoring software, and separate spaces for different age groups.
