Paper Covers Rock: Graphic Arts & Athens Music

An exhibition of graphic and fine arts held in partnership with ‘Art Rocks Athens’, an organization seeking to revisit, celebrate and archive the unique relationship of art and music in Athens during the flourishing decade 1975-1985. The exhibition is curated by Sean Bourne, known for his graphic art work with early Athens bands. Included will be posters, flyers, album and magazine covers, buttons, bumper stickers and more. The ‘Art Rocks Athens’ event is a community-wide two-month schedule of activities, exhibitions and performances.

Paper Covers Rock: Part II, Photography Exhibition and Concert



Celebrating the Arts and Music scene in Athens from 1975-1985, guest curator Sean Bourne’s, exhibit of graphic arts, posters, record cover designs and other ephemera are on display. Joining this exhibit is a series of black and white contact sheet photography on loan from the Special Collections Library at the University of Georgia. These vintage works of band portraits are organized by Chris Rasmussen and Keith Bennett. The photography exhibition and concert are scheduled for Sunday, June 22 from 2:00 - 5:00 p.m.. at Lyndon House Arts Center.

Music is provided by bands whose members are the sons and daughters of artists involved in the Paper Covers Rock exhibition. Feedback, is composed of high school students who deliver energetic cover versions of standard rock classics as well as a few original tunes.

Array offers all original material, whose sound has been described as a modern take on the new wave genre – post punk with melodic inclinations. Although based in Atlanta, Array has a deep-rooted connection to Athens, as two of the three are the offspring of Cindy Wilson, a founding member of the B-52s. This is Array’s Athens debut.

Performing as headliner is the legendary Michael Guthrie. Michael Guthrie has been writing lyrical American power pop songs in the British tradition since the 1960s.The Michael Guthrie Band was formed by Mike and brother Herb Guthrie in Europe at the same time the music that became the British invasion of the Beatles and the Rolling Stones was being created.
