Visions of MLK 2018
Call for Artists: “Visions of MLK Art Exhibition: Time to Do What's Right”
The “Visions of MLK Celebration & Art Exhibition” is entering its 11th year as a supporting event associated with the community initiative “Make It A Day On, Not A Day Off Day of Service”. The Lyndon House Arts Center invites artists and writers to design original works for our annual “Visions of MLK Art Exhibition.” The exhibition will feature poetry and art: combining poetic words and visual works to interpret powerful ideas and emotions. Collaborations between artists and writers are encouraged but not required. This year’s theme, "Time to Do What’s Right", is curated by Montu Miller.
Deciding on this theme, Montu references Martin Luther King Jr.’s speech, A Proper Sense of Priorities on February 6, 1968. King says, “On some positions cowardice asks the question, is it safe? Expediency asks the question, is it politic? Vanity asks the question, is it popular? But conscience asks the question, is it right? And there comes a time when one must take a position that is neither safe, nor politic, nor popular but he must take it because conscience tells him it is right."
If you choose to work collaboratively, the collaborative team can incorporate artists/ writers/ poets/illustrators/ graphic designers and more. The collaborative works of art can use any medium. The Arts Center and Curator Montu Miller can offer assistance in pairing creative teams if needed.
This year, the Arts Center will provide panels to the first 10 collaborative teams (one panel per team) to be used to create an original artwork based on the theme.
